Meet A Merchant: Aaron's Apothecary
Helping the Neighborhood to Keep it Local
Aaron's Apothecary | 2338 N. Clark
The team at Clark Street in Lincoln Park loves keeping it local, and not only around the holiday season, but all year round. Clark Street and Diversey Parkway have so many awesome independent shops to keep our dollars in the local economy including a one-of-a-kind shop, Aaron’s Apothecary! For those who haven’t visited Aaron’s Apothecary, it is more than just a pharmacy, it’s a trip back in time. It provides a unique, warm, and inviting experience the average customer seldom encounters during their visits to the pharmacy.
Located at 2338 N. Clark, Aaron’s Apothecary opened its doors six years ago in February 2011, during a blizzard that delivered over 20 inches of snow. Aaron Pietrykowski, owner of the namesake shop, was told opening during such a weather event was a good sign for his business and we think so far that’s proven to be true! Aaron credits the business’ success to his loyal customers as well as his emphasis on exceptional service and continual product education.
Aaron got his start working for a neighborhood pharmacy on Clark Street that had been a staple of the community for many generations. Unfortunately the business closed and Aaron felt a huge void left in the community. In addition to the pharmacy closure, Aaron, like many of us, loved (and still loves) to travel and had been many places around the world. With the lack of an independent pharmacist and his passion to travel, Aaron saw an opportunity to bring back the “old-world pharmacies of Europe, as well as apothecaries [found] all over the globe” and he decided to open his own business, and thus Aaron’s Apothecary was born. Today the shop serves more than just the neighborhood, but they provide delivery service to a large portion of the city. You’ll also find licensed estheticians on hand to help clients find the right skincare and beauty products, plus pharmacists who are well versed in nutritional supplements and homeopathic remedies, as an alternative and supplement to standard pharmaceuticals.
You won’t only find your typical drug store products at Aaron’s, because Aaron still keeps up his international travels and often has unique new products. The staff at Aaron’s is very selective about their products and aims to stock brands that are exclusive and new to customers. They offer everything from fragrances to candles to special little gifts that are perfect for everyone. This along with their regular interactions with customers is what makes Aaron’s Apothecary a special place. They welcome customers with open arms and truly build relationships, a trait you are finding less and less in retail. These characteristics echo that shopping local not only helps the local economy, but it helps to provide a sense of community. Plus, for those customers that frequent the businesses on Clark Street, you help to keep the neighborhood vibrant and the lights on at businesses like Aaron’s Apothecary!
Aaron certainly helps to support his neighboring businesses as well. When asked where he likes to go, he struggles to choose one place, commenting that “there’s too many to mention.” Although, one spot the folks at Aaron’s love to swing by for a bite after a long day’s work is Riccardo Enoteca. On a more regular basis, the team at Aaron’s Apothecary visits Big Apple Finer Foods, Molly’s Cupcakes, and By the Park, just to name a few. Aaron was quick to point out that they consider themselves fortunate “to have so many products and services offered in [their] block alone, such as Young’s Cleaners, Holtzmann’s Jewelers, Frankie’s on the Park, Gus Shoe Repair, Akira…the list goes on.” He’s also excited to learn of new businesses coming to the neighborhood and fortunately Clark Street has several new businesses opening up shop soon.
Before our conversation ended, Aaron let me know that “he has a strong passion to make [Clark Street] thrive” and it’s up to each of us, as everyday shoppers, to help our local businesses. Clark Street and Diversey Parkway have so many great stores, services, and eateries, so when you’re out and about doing your holiday shopping this winter remember to stop by Aaron’s Apothecary for that special gift, card, or even for your everyday needs!
